On the 25th of November, the Welsh Govt announced that from 1 December anyone between 50 and 64 can request a flu vaccine.

This news was sprung without warning on GP practices across Wales. Back in October, GP’s had requested that they be able to vaccinate a wider age group but we were told there were supply problems with vaccine supplies for Wales. Since then, we had no more information from the Welsh Govt until their press release on the 25th.

After a mammoth campaign to get the over 65’s and ‘at risk’ groups vaccinated within the Dyfi Valley, we have NO flu vaccines at the moment.

We know this will be disappointing to patients, but we are working hard with Powys Teaching Health Board to identify how we can source over 1300 vaccines for this area at such short notice. But GP’s across Wales are facing exactly the same problem, and we will try to help each other as much as possible.

Up to this point, we at Dyfi Valley Health have been prioritising urgent care and covid care for the sake of the community. We have been focusing on helping Powys Teaching Health Board prepare for the mass covid vaccination programme. The announcement from the Welsh Govt has been a shock to us all.

Please be patient whilst we work with Powys Teaching Health Board and Community Pharmacies to plan for this new over 50’s flu vaccine programme. We kindly ask that you do not visit the surgery or telephone to request the flu vaccine until we know more.

We will provide an update to the community as soon as possible with information about how people can access the vaccine.

Thank you,

Dyfi Valley Health
